Beychevelle, met zijn iconisch label met een vikingschip, staat bekend als één van de meer toegankelijke en drinkklare wijnen uit Saint Julien. Desondanks blijft Beychevelle onder leiding van Philippe Blanc grote kwalitatieve stappen te zetten. De 2023 vertoont een recordhoog percentage Cabernet Sauvignon in het assemblage met 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot en 4% Petit Verdot. 13,3%vol. Deze Saint Julien Grand Cru Classé heeft een heldere robijnrode kleur en een neus vol peperige, licht met hout geïnfuseerde fruittonen van bramen en kruiden. Op de tong ontdekken we een subtiele balans tussen romige aardbei en rode kers met een toets van balsamico. De tannines zijn verfijnd en geven de wijn een fijne textuur, die nog wat tijd nodig heeft om volledig samen te smelten. De 2023 Château Beychevelle biedt een verfijnde structuur, met levendige zuren en sappige tannines. Met invloeden van cassis, potloodkrullen, grafiet en viooltkes, weet deze heerlijke wijn diepte en complexiteit elegant over te brengen. In zijn jeugd is hij nog even strak en lineair, maar het ontwikkelingspotentieel is groot. Verwacht vanaf 2028-2030 een meer harmonieuze wijn. IN DE PERS 93-94 William Kelley – robertparker.com (April 2024) The 2023 Beychevelle has turned out especially well this year, exhibiting a more integrated, seductive style than recent vintages that were constructed in a punchier, more extracted register. Offering up aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pen ink, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit and a classy, suave profile that foregrounds the estate's prime vineyard holdings on the plateau around Ducru-Beaucaillou. It's a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot that represents 50% of the estate's production. 92-94 Neal Martin – vinous.com (April 2024) The 2023 Beychevelle was picked from September 13 through October 6 over 17 days of harvest, partly because of the size of the crop and not having to rush. It has the highest proportion of Merlot under winemaker Philippe Blanc (35%), and it matured in 70% new oak. This has a notably floral and tightly-knit bouquet, leaning a little more toward blue fruit than other Saint-Julien wines tasted from barrel. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins that impart a sense of linearity. Very saline, this is a saliva-inducing Beychevelle, lightly spiced with a structured, almost Pauillac-like finish. Excellent. 94-96 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (April 2024) The 2023 Beychevelle is fabulous. As always, Beychevelle includes quite a bit more Merlot than most wines in the appellation, but the Cabernet is especially high here. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, mocha, licorice and lavender build in the glass. This juicy, extroverted Saint-Julien has a ton to offer. The combination of fruit intensity, acid and supporting structure is superb. The 2023 is showy, but not at all overdone. Beychevelle remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. It is especially classy in this edition. Tasted two times. Drink 2033-2063. 90-92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – thewineindependent.com (April 2024) The 2023 Beychevelle represents 50% of this year's crop. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs with vibrant notes of redcurrant jelly and blackcurrant pastilles giving way to an undercurrent of cranberries, crushed rocks, and wild thyme plus a hint of black olives. The light to medium-bodied palate is refreshing and pure, with a slight chewiness to the well-managed tannins, finishing on a savory note. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. This is the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in Beychevelle ever, following the new plans to include more of this variety. 94 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (April 2024) Plummy red fruits, fresh acidities, sculpted tannic architure, this has balance and finesse, white pepper, capsicum spice, black tea, cigar box, liqourice root, rose petals, fine tannins, St Julien balance with a kick of smoked oak on the finish. 93-96 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (Mei 2024) 94-95 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (April 2024) Pure fruit to this, with blueberries, hazelnuts, walnut and blackcurrants. Just like eating grapes at this stage. It has a full body, juicy tannins and a savory finish. Remains vivid and energetic. 16,5+/20 James Lawther – jancisrobinson.com (Mei 2024) 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Floral nose. Elegant texture and tannins. Suave, smooth and fresh. Not quite the depth of a top year but has all the components. 13.3%. Drink 2030 – 2045. 94-96 Jeff Leve – thewinecellarinsider.com (Mei 2024) 95-96 Terre de Vins 95-96 Bernard Burtschy – Les Echos 93-95 rvf.com BeychevelleDe kwaliteitssprong is een feit. Beychevelle was altijd al gekend voor souplesse (met minder Cabernet Sauvignon in assemblage), maar blinkt hij nu ook “academisch” uit. Het terroir van Graves is beplant met 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc en 3% Petit Verdot tegen 9.000 wijnstokken per hectare die gemiddeld 35 jaar oud zijn. De vinificatie gebeurt parcellair in de nieuwe cuverie met conische inox cuves (sinds 2016), waar geen pomp meer aan te pas komt. Romain Ducolomb kwam over van Clinet als technisch directeur. Samen met Philippe Blanc verricht hij wonderen. Eric Boissenot is de oenoloog. Suntory en Pierre Castel zijn elk voor de helft eigenaar. Het wereldberoemd etiket met de drakar is iconisch. Chinezen kennen Beychevelle als de “dragon boat wine” en zijn er tuk op. Château Beychevelle est un prestigieux Cru Classé à l’âme forgée par trois siècles d’histoire. Sous Henri II, Beychevelle fut le fief des ducs d’Epernon. Le premier d’entre eux, Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette, grand amiral de France, est à l’origine du nom du Domaine. Selon la légende, les navires passant devant son château devaient baisser leurs voiles en signe d’allégeance, d’où le nom de Beychevelle : baisse voile. Edifié en 1757, le château Beychevelle figure toujours parmi les fleurons du Bordelais. L’élégance de son architecture se reflète dans ses vins, résultat d’une recherche constante de l’équilibre entre puissance et raffinement. La politique de respect de l’environnement et de la santé humaine menée depuis plusieurs années lui a valu dès 2005 une qualification au titre de « l’Agriculture Raisonnée » et une attestation de conformité au cahier des charges «Terra Vitis ». | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
